News in brief: improved twitter results service

** With the majority of the men’s Leinster leagues and women’s division one tipping off this Saturday, the Hook is hoping to provide the handiest and earliest results service for all divisions via twitter. To add your team or club’s results on Saturday afternoon add the #leinsterhockey hashtag along with the division and scoreline (eg Men’s Div Three – Corinthian x TRR x #leinsterhockey).

It would also be great if spectators could post latest scores on each match day but please make sure to say that it is a “latest” to avoid any confusion. The mens and womens division one previews with full rundowns on each teams comings and goings over the summer will be posted prior to the weekend’s big tip-off.

** Clontarf men’s hockey club will celebrate their 30th anniversary on September 24 with a day of events. All past and present players, coaches and friends, past and present are invited to take part in the festivities which begins with a match at 2.30pm in Mount Temple and will be followed by a barbecue and refreshments at the club’s Reeling in the Years social evening in Clontarf rugby club on Castle Avenue. ** The IHA’s Grassroots Working Group is currently carrying out research of the hockey playing population – why do we attract players, what do people like about our sport and most importantly why do we lose players? In order to answers these questions, the group are holding three focus groups. The aim is to look at the reasons that men are leaving our sport.

The IHA will subsequently publish the results and this exercise will benefit all in helping understand why we lose players. The hope is that with this information clubs, branches and the IHA can find ways to halt the drop-off of male players.

** THC Hurley, with Andy McConnell and Phelie Maguire in their panel, got off to a winning start to the Dutch Rabo Hoofdklasse with a 6-3 victory over Kampong in their first game since promotion to the top tier. The Irish connection with the club is added to by assistant coach Bert Vreeken who coached the pair at Three Rock Rovers in their Leinster title winning run of 2003.

Elsewhere in the division, Conor Harte scored for SCHC in a 4-1 loss to Pinoke. He is with the club for a second season along with twin brother David. Mitch Darling has also been added to the Bilthoven team’s line-up, switching from Den Bosch.
