Men’s International Challenge Match
Ireland 0 Canada 0
Ireland drew 0-0 with Canada for the second day in succession at Stormont as visiting goalkeeper Anthoni Kindler hit form to leave the Irish winless from their three-game series.
John Jermyn and Alan Sothern’s snap-shots drew top saves while Peter Caruth fizzed one wide as the Irish created plenty of opportunities but Paul Revington’s side were left frustrated for a third game in a row in front of goal.
Gubbar Singh twice went close for the Canucks for whom Ken Pereira and Rob Short played again, a day after breaking their national caps record in their 318th appearance, before returning to their Dutch club, HGC, to play Glenanne on Friday afternoon in the last 16 of the European Hockey League.
For Ireland, Revington made one change from Tuesday, bringing Davy Carson back in for his second cap in place of Michael Maguire.
In total, Revington introduced six new caps in the three game series as he begins the build-up to August’s European Championships which carry three Olympic qualifying berths.
The coach, though, was not left overly pleased with the week’s efforts, notably the first half of this third tie played in front of a decent crowd.
After an initial corner was earned but spurned, Canada’s backline of Scott Tupper, Hudson Steward, Adam Froese and Gordie Johnston dealt quite comfortably with the hosts advances.
The second half was livelier with both goalkeepers more active but despite a few snap-shots, the scores remained blank for a second successive tie.
Commenting on the series, Ireland Manager, Peter Jackson said: “Despite the lack of goals, this was an extremely valuable test series for both sides as they prepare Europeans & Pan American Games. Ireland were able to cap new players and the experience of playing a non European side will prove most beneficial in phasing our build up in the next few months.”
