Men’s Division Two
Clontarf 5 (Cain Cooney 2, Andy Butler, Kevin Mullins, Gareth Borland) Suttonians 2
Clontarf triumphed for the second time in three seasons tonight as they put away their chances against north Dublin rivals Suttonians, completing a remarkable turnaround from 12 months ago.
Relegation looked to have been savage on the Malahide road club with 11 players who had turned out for them in 2009/10 moving on to new pastures. But Gareth Borland moulded the most organised team in the division while opening up the opportunity for the likes of Robert Forrest and Kevin Mullins among others to enjoy a greater role in the team.
They return to division one – barring any late changes in league structure – for 2011/12 replacing Weston and it will be interesting to see how they fare.
On the night, they did not quite hit their heights but were savvy enough to get a 2-0 half-time lead through Cain Cooney’s effort and a class piece of dexterity from Andy Butler. Stephen Ludgate’s cross from the right was slightly behind his run but he adjusted his hands to deflect behind his back for the second.
Mullins finished off a team move for the third before setting up with a reverse-stick cross for Cooney to finish and make it 4-0. But Suttonians were not a spent force and grabbed two goals in quick succession and drew a couple of top saves from Stephen Cairns which kept Clontarf clear. Borland’s late corner settled any nerves, though.
