Town back in business as Pembroke falter

Men’s Division One
Monkstown 2 (Richard Sykes, Frank Ryan) Pembroke 0

Pembroke’s league hopes took a big blow in Rathdown as an understrength Monkstown got second half goals to convert a scoreless first half into victory for the second week running.

The Town did so without the firepower of Gareth Watkins (head injury), Kyle Good (finger) and Andrew Ward who has gone on Erasmus to Germany in the past week.

Pembroke were sharper in the first half attacking the circle well, Gordon Elliott looking sharp, but David Fitzgerald kept out the corners of Adam Pritchard to ensure a blank half-time score.

And the Town, with Fran Lee enjoying his night, hit the front ten minutes into the second period when Richard Sykes shot a low-drag into the bottom left corner. It came soon after Billy McEnery drew a point-blank save from David Williamson.

The game was sealed late on as the pitch got slippier in the cold when Alec Barrett- making his seasonal debut – controlled and slotted to Frank Ryan who completed the second.
