The top four from the Leinster schoolgirl’s senior premier league showed their class to advance last Saturday to the semi-finals of the Senior Cup but the tightness of their battles showed the competitiveness at the top level. Mount Anville, for the second time within a month, edged out High School in the semi-final race, winning out 1-0.
The pair drew 2-2 last time round, a result which ended up pivotal in nudging the Rathgar school out of the playoffs in cruel fashion.
Wesley, meanwhile, had a ding-dong battle with near neighbours Loreto, Beaufort. The pair shared two early goals before Wes moved 3-1 ahead at the interval only for Beaufort to pull one back in the second half. They threw the kitchen sink at Wesley late on but Sarah Robinson’s defence held them out to take the 3-2 result.
They will play competition favourites St Andrew’s – coached by Irish international Lisa Jacob – in the final four as they made the difference in leagues tell against Senior One side St Columba’s.
The small Rathfarnham school were surprise quarter-finalists following an impressive win over Our Lady’s Terenure. Similarly, Santa Sabina – also from Senior One – impressed in wins over Our Lady’s Grove and Newpark to make a rare last eight match-up.
The Sutton school, playing an international-laden Alexandra College, gave a fine account of themselves with a half-court press and solid defensive organisation.
Deirdre Duke did bang in a tenth minute penalty corner rebound for the only goal of the first half for Alex. Debutante Lauren Power got the second and Emily Beatty – a youth Olympian last summer – made it 3-0. Alex play Mount Anville in their semi-final on March 1 while the final takes place on March 4 in Grange Road .
