Alexandra College beat the weather last Thursday to sneak in a fourth win of their Leinster Schoolgirl’s Premier League campaign, staying right in the mix for a semi-final place.
The recent cold snap had put paid to a couple of rounds of the competition but Alex took full advantage of the brief thaw to catch up and now find themselves in a three-way tie for top spot in Section B with Loreto, Beaufort and St Andrew’s.
Muckross started strongly, forcing the issue in the opening five stages before the Milltown side worked their way into the tie.
And they duly broke the deadlock in the 20 minutes when Erika Hinkson played a brilliant 50-yard pass from deep on the left-hand side to the marauding Deirdre Duke on the penalty spot. Her initial shot was rebounded to Ciara Maginn who laid off to Duke to finish high.
And Nicola Gray drilled a bullet penalty-corner soon after for 2-0 half-time advantage
Again, Muckross started the second half well, pulling back a goal when they raced down the left wing, crossing for a simple back-post tap-in.
But the game was taken away from the Marlborough Road outfit by Duke and Hinkson when the latter was shepherded to the baseline but managed to smash a reverse-stick shot to the net from the narrowest of angles.
And Gray added an extra garnish to the scoreline late on with her second corner strike as the pitch began to freeze in parts.
Meanwhile, the first round of the Senior Cup was also decimated with ten ties postponed due to the icy conditions around the city.
But three ties did manage to get played with Santa Sabina getting the better of Newpark 3-2 in an all-Senior One tie while Rathdown beat Muckross on penalty strokes.
Mount Temple were the big winners, making their Premier division class tell in a 6-1 success against Loreto on the Green.
They flew out of the blocks, 14 year-old Ailish O’Neill banging home a penalty corner inside two minutes before Sarah Murray double the advantage when she touched home at the back post.
Nicola Taylor converted the third, again from a set-piece a Bebhinn O’Neill made it 4-0 from open play, profiting from Camille Rantz-McDonald’s fine work down the left.
Loreto did pull one back a minute before the break through Emma Garry, netting from the move of the game.
But Temple were back on the scoring trail when Hayley Manning deflected a crash ball into the backboard. Sarah Murray netted her second to complete the half-dozen.
Loreto never gave up and came close to scoring on numerous occasions in the second half but none went their way, leaving them to move into the Senior Plate competition.
