Senior Schoolgirl’s Premier League
After two rounds of the Senior Premier League, some of the front-runners are beginning to show their hand as last year’s cup finalists Mount Anville and St Andrew’s recorded their second wins of the season.
The pair have taken the initiative in their respective groups in the second year of the competition which sees two sets of seven teams contending for the semi-final places.
In Section A, U-18 international Aisling Naughton has netted three times in two games to help the Goatstown school to victories over Loreto Dalkey and Our Lady’s Terenure.
Jenny Maguire’s powerful corner strike added to Naughton’s double on Tuesday against Dalkey in a 3-1 success while Lisa McCarthy – another youth international – helped Anville to victory in their first tie against Terenure.
Last year’s league semi-finalists Wesley began their campaign, meanwhile, with a 4-0 win over Dalkey and followed up with a 2-1 win over Loreto Dalkey to get off to the perfect start.
Section B looks set to see Alexandra College, Andrew’s and Loreto Beaufort battlng it out for the two semi-final slots.
Beaufort have begun in fine style, scoring twice in the first five minutes of their league opener against Muckross en route to a 4-1 win before edging out Mount Temple 1-0 on Tuesday in their second game of the campaign.
Temple have been a lively presence in the Premier League in their second year at this level but have been unlucky to miss out by a single goal in both their fixtures to date.
Erika Hinkson’s fine deflection to Nicola Gray’s piledriver was the difference for Alexandra College in their tie with the Malahide Road school in a 2-1 result.
Rebecca Evans early opener was cancelled out by a brilliant Sarah Murray counter-attack goal. The Irish school’s international sprinter zipped onto Nicola Taylor’s first-time through-ball to level with a controlled finish at the near post.
But Alex had the majority of play and got the decisive goal just before half-time to get their season up and running in positive fashion with Deirdre Duke and Emily Beatty still to return to the fray.
St Andrew’s, again, will be one of the sides to beat with Gillian Pinder looking to add to her haul of medals. A 6-2 success over Holy Child, Killiney and a 4-1 win over Loreto Foxrock have started their year in ominous form.
