Coach: Gareth Evans/Graham Shaw (1st season)
Players In: none
Players Out: Lizzie Colvin (Netherlands), Clodagh Grealy (retired)
Summary: An excellent preseason with wins over Greenfields, Pembroke and Railway Union and a draw with Hermes under the new stewardship of Gareth Evans and Graham Shaw means Loreto are bubbling nicely going into the new season.
It has eased a couple of worries from a summer in which Clodagh Grealy has moved into the manager’s role due to injury and Lizzie Colvin has moved to Holland on Erasmus.
Nikki Symmons’ first call up to the Irish cricket team clashes with an IHL trip to Belfast Harlequins. She will also miss a couple of league games due to the CPP as will Niamh Small and Nicci Daly but Louisa Healy is freed from those commitments since retiring earlier this month.
Loreto’s league challenge faltered a little under these strains last season, having to play Hermes and Railway last season during periods when their quintet – as it was then – were on international duty.
Their ISC win, though, showed their ability to thrill. The likes of Sarah Barnwell and Sinead McGirr will be more prominent while Nikki Keegan’s trickery remains a threat.
As such, their best shot at a title may well be in the national competitions rather than in the domestic league.
First three games: Glenanne (a); Corinthian (h); Bray (a)
