‘Garvey hosts major Masters event

Lisnagarvey is gearing up for the Irish Masters ‘Home Nations Plus’ tournament which runs from August 21 to 23, the first time an Irish venue has hosted such an event.

Five countries are taking part in the men’s over 40s category – Ireland, England, Wales, Scotland, Germany – while competition will also take place in the men’s over 50s and women’s over 40s level, making it a true festival of hockey.

For the women, this will be only their second tournament since making their inaugural foray in Wales in late June this year.

The squad has strengthened since then with Debbie Wilson from Randalstown, along with Annie Lawlor from Pembroke, adding nous and skill to the midfield, while the experienced Roly Burke (Hermes) and Noreen O’Riordan (Loreto) strengthen the defence.

The attack is supplemented by Sue Vincent (Loreto) and Emma Meir (Avoca). The squad, captained by Pembroke’s Alison Pigot, face Wales on Saturday at 3pm, hoping to better their previous 2-2 draw, and will seek to provide stiffer competition against England who they play on Sunday at 11.30am and again in a ‘friendly’ match on Monday at 10.15am.
