* Monkstown U-16’s, under the tutelage of Trevor Watkins and captain by David Cole, won the prestigious HOD International Tournament in Holland last weekend. After cruising through their group they beat rivals Banbridge 3-2 in a hotly contested semi-final.

Formidable Belgian outfit Royal Antwerp, the reigning champions, stood in the Dubliners’ way in what proved a classy, flowing game of hockey from both sides which ended 1-1 after extra time.

Two great penalty saves, though, from goalkeeper Stefan Gallagher left Johnny Byrnes to step up and fire the decisive stroke to hand Monkstown their first title at the Valkenswaard event.
