Reds held; Rovers and Town scrape home

Men’s Divsion One:
Clontarf 1 (Derek Ledwidge) TRR 2 (Peter Blakeney, Garry Ringwood)
Three Rock Rovers were pushed all the way by Clontarf who bounced back well from their opening day mauling against Pembroke. Peter Blakeney and Garry Ringwood built up a 2-0 half-time lead at Mount Temple.

But the Bulls fought back with Derek Ledwidge on target as Rovers were almost made to pay for resting Blakeney and Michael Maguire in the second half due to Sunday’s Irish concerns. South African Pierre Devaux made his debut for Rovers and looks set to be a combative threat for division one defences this term.

Monkstown 3 (Frank Ryan, Andy Ewington, Gareth Waktins) UCD 2 (Jamie Tobin, Robbie McFarlane)
Gareth Watkins stole the points for the Town at Rathdown as John McInroy’s UCD almost hijacked a point courtesy of Ross Gribben’s brilliant padwork.
UCD took the lead in the 20th minute when Jamie Tobin robbed Stephen Cole on halfway, played a one-two with Robbie McFarlane before smashing past Craig Ellis. Ian Allen tapped in to level on half-time.
Andy Ewington and McFarlane exchanged goals to advance the score to 2-2 before Gribben pulled off a string of saves, mainly from Gareth Watkins, and notably from a penalty stroke with a diving stick save. But they were stung when a quickly taken hit out was blocked by Nick Dee who set up Watkins to nick the points.

Railway Union 1 (Peter English) Corinthian 1 (Lucas Piccioli)
Railway earned their first point of the season thanks to Peter English’s ripped penalty corner in the closing minutes of their tie with Corinthian at Park Avenue. Stephen O’Keefe excelled on the day, keeping out five corner shots but could do little about Lucas Piccioli’s red-hot form as the Venezuelan rounded the net-minder to score from a tight angle.
English’s flicking skills have developed immensely in recent times and he drag-flicked home Railway’s third corner to earn a share of the spoils.
